Edge computing explained simply

Edge computing is a decentralized computer architecture that enables data to be processed closer to where it is generated instead of sending it to a central data center.

Due to the increasing networking of devices and emerging technologies such as AR (augmented reality) or VR (virtual reality), fast data processing is becoming increasingly important. Until now, such applications have been processed via the cloud or conventionally via local servers. However, data processing using edge computing is even faster.

This is because edge computing means that data is processed directly where it is generated - for example on a device or in a local network. This means that it does not have to be sent to distant servers (e.g. in the cloud) first. In addition to the increased speed, this also has other advantages (see below).

Edge computing: opportunities and challenges

Edge computing is already being used in numerous industries. In the course of digitalization, more and more companies and organizations will not be able to avoid implementing edge computing in the future. The new technology offers numerous opportunities, but also brings with it a number of challenges that need to be overcome.

Advantages of edge computing

Whether in banking or retail, customer service or increasing productivity: edge computing can be used in almost all industries and areas where fast data processing and low latency play a central role.

As already explained in the introduction, the main advantage of edge computing technologies is the fast and efficient processing of data. More precisely, edge computing enables:

  1. Lower latency timesReal-time data processing on site instead of on remote servers for faster data transfers.
  2. Bandwidth savingsReduces the need to send large amounts of data over long distances. This also reduces costs.
  3. Greater reliability and data securityMinimizing potential risks and failures through edge computing.

The challenges of edge computing

Like any other new technology, edge computing brings with it a number of challenges. First and foremost, it is the complex implementation and management of the new technology that represents a major challenge for many entrepreneurs.

This challenge has become even more complicated due to the shortage of skilled workers, as it is anything but easy, IT experts in a timely manner. Companies also rely on experienced experts for maintenance and the installation of updates. IT specialists instructed.

Another challenge of edge computing is, for example, compliance with data protection, as sensitive data is processed directly where it is created. Clear security concepts, regular audits and general compliance with legal requirements are required here. In order to guarantee this, cooperation with technical experts is essential.

Find IT specialists for edge projects

As already mentioned, the implementation and maintenance of edge computing technologies requires qualified specialists, especially in the areas of network administration, cyber security and software development.

In order to be able to employ these IT experts despite the prevailing shortage of skilled workers, temporary employment is recommended. With this solution, the necessary specialists can be employed quickly and flexibly for the required period at low cost.
